So, I have been thinking that I should lower my caffeine intake. I am not sleeping as well as I used to. I don't kow if I have a 'problem' with caffeine, but I certainly find myself consuming quite a bit. Here are some interesting facts I have found from all over the web while researching the health risks that may be associated with caffeine:

-what are some of the benefits and dangers of drinking more coffee these days? Some “perks”:Some studies suggest that caffeine may improve a person’s physical and cognitive abilities. Drinking caffeine one hour before exercise may reduce exercise-related muscle soreness. Caffeine may help treat headaches by constricting blood vessels. Some research supports that caffeine also helps absorb certain medications more quickly, which is why it is sometimes added to pain medications.

Some concerns: Caffeine may disturb sleep patterns and increase anxiety in some individuals. For regular coffee drinkers, caffeine can be addictive. For these individuals, going without caffeine can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, headaches, and fatigue. Caffeine can negatively affect bone health in women who don’t get enough calcium.Approximately 150-250 mg of caffeine provides a mild central nervous stimulant effect. Many 12-16 oz chic coffees provide at least 290-345 mg of caffeine.

Coffee Facts: 1) Coffee is second to water as the most consumed beverage.

2) Finland consumes the most coffee with each person drinking 740 servings/year. The United Kingdom drinks the least amount of coffee with each citizen drinking 145 servings/year while each American in the United States falls in between the extremes, drinking 280 servings/year.

3) Coffee ranks second to petroleum in dollars traded worldwide.

4) Typically, the caffeine content in iced tea is 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 of that found in brewed coffee. (health and wellness magazine)

Also:

Caffeine does not accumulate in the bloodstream nor is it stored in the body. It is excreted in the urine many hours after it has been consumed.
Caffeine will not reduce the effects of alcohol, although many people still believe a cup of coffee will "sober-up" an intoxicated person.
Caffeine may be used as a treatment for
migraine headaches and in relieving, for a short time, fatigue or drowsiness.

Excessive caffeine intake can lead to a fast heart rate, diuresis (excessive urination), nausea and vomiting, restlessness, anxiety, depression, tremors, and difficulty sleeping.

There is no human requirement for caffeine in the diet. Moderate caffeine intake, however, is not associated with any health risk.

Pay attention to this:

Three 8 oz. cups of coffee (250 milligrams of caffeine) per day is considered an average or moderate amount of caffeine. Ten 8 oz. cups of coffee per day is considered excessive intake of caffeine. (netwellness)

8 oz of coffee - 135 mg caffeine

12 oz Diet Coke - 46.5 mg caffeine Mountain Dew - 55.5 mg

Sometimes I think maybe caffeine isn't so bad. But I would like to see if my body would allow me to operate at nearly the level I operate at now without it. Not saying that that is really that great either... Gotta go, headaches and irritability here I come!
